Frogboy: No more Objectbar?
Monday, February 25th, 2008 @ 9:23 pm

Stardock honcho Brad “Frogboy” Wardell has let loose a bunch of complaints about the current state of the “skinning community” over on his site. Check it here.

Meanwhile, a quote over on Teknidermy (but one that I cannot find in the original posting… maybe it was removed?) seems to hint at the end of ObjectBar (nee MacVision):

“Already, there’s consequences. There will be no ObjectBar 3. It’s too expensive to develop and there’s too little help from the community to justify the effort versus the revenue it generates. DesktopX barely is surviving and only because Stardock uses it so heavily internally.”

That quote is over here.

MacWinDos

MacWinDos, a popular old-timey emulation message board is back in business. As an added bonus, Rob “Jawa” Snyder’s seven year ban from that forum has been lifted!

Dade!
Wednesday, February 20th, 2008 @ 8:22 pm

Here’s a good question that perhaps someone can answer:

“My name is Ivan, I work in a music education lab at Miami Dade College where we are facing a serious problem. Some of the programs we run are outdated OS 9 programs, where developers have either sold the company, or show no intention of porting them to Mac OS 10.5. My dilemma is that the college is upgrading all the computers to new the new iMacs, this completely cripples the lab I work in as far as student education is concerned, none of the programs we have are going to be able to run on the new OS. While sheepshaver has allowed us to run OS 9 effectively, the licensing agreements for the programs only allow us to run them over a network using a server. While using ‘Slirp’ has allowed us to connect to the internet and access some files over the network, sheepshaver gives me the error message, “The file server’s connection has unexpectedly closed down” when I attempt to connect to the lab server. At first I assumed that it was a server problem until I was able to connect to it using another computer running OS X, unfortunately the other computer was not running sheepshaver. My question: is there anything I can do to fix this? I tried using ’slirp’ and the ‘basilisk II slirp’ but with no results. Does anyone have any ideas?”

Answer it over here.

Basilisk II: NIT

“Ironically, this is yet another thing you can’t do on the iPhone or iPod Touch.”

“Slim Jim” Waters spreads the word about running Basilisk II on your Nokia Internet Tablet. Complete with helpful instructions and pretty screenshots.

Mini vMac Stuff
Wednesday, February 6th, 2008 @ 4:59 pm

All sorts of Mini vMac stuff going on over here that sort of passed me by despite the fact that Mini vMac is my favorite thing ever.

January 18 saw a new version of the Nintendo DS port of the emulator.

SheepShaver FAQ!

A little SheepShaver FAQ is in the works over here. Be sure to stop by and contribute some questions or suggestions. Would like to get that up on the main pagespace eventually.

There is an updated version of a longstanding prefs editor for SheepShaver for MacOS X. Get it over here. Scroll down to a post made on January 28 by “MetalSnake.”

Forum Notes!
Saturday, January 26th, 2008 @ 9:24 pm

Okay, so I haven’t really been paying attention to the site forum for a while. But when I check it out this afternoon I was surprised to learn that it sees a fair bit of traffic, particularly in the sheepshaver section. Check it out!

Meanwhile, over in the “General” folder one new user has posted a little pre-history of the emulation scene. Check that over here (scroll down to the post by “David Small”). I don’t pretend to understand what it all means but it covers some neat stuff from the mid 1980s.

And also in the “stuff I don’t really understand” file is a new folder created by our Sheepshaver guru Cat_7 “on how to run OSX though qemu on different platforms.” Check out the folder (empty now) over here, and Cat’s link on the subject over here.

From that site:

“The goal is to get every Intel-based Mac OS X version running without modifications on virtualization software, including but not limited to:

* Qemu (done)
* KVM (done)
* XEN
* VirtualBox”

Okay. That’s all for now.

Sheepshaver stuff
Saturday, January 5th, 2008 @ 3:36 pm

Hat-tip to Slim Jim for the following SheepShaver news bites:

First, there is a round-up of the new builds of Sheepshaver and Basilisk II for the Macintosh over here.

Meanwhile there is some Sheepshaver love on OSNews.com over here.

A sneak:

“When Steve Jobs announced Apples transition to Intel’s x86 processor line, a huge stir occurred among some Mac OS X users who depend on ‘Classic’ the OS9 environment in Mac OS X for their day to day Mac usage, as Mac OS X on Intel means no more ‘Classic’ and they were right. Rosetta allows PowerPC applications to run on x86 through JIT (Just In Time) architecture emulation, but its translation is not on a low enough level within OS X to allow ‘Classic’ to work on x86 and as such those among us who use OS9 applications have been left out in the cold. Until now that is: a project called ‘Sheep Shaver’ was created to allow BeOS on PowerPC emulate the PowerPC architecture to run another PowerPC operating system on top of BeOS. This application was ported to Mac OS X with the demise of Be Inc. and has since been ported to Mac OS X on Intel processors.”

Like, wow!!

Mihocka: Helping PearPC?
Friday, December 28th, 2007 @ 9:30 pm

Over on his forum, Jim “Slim” Watters has reported that Softmac developer Darek Mihocka was once interested in “[taking] over the development work
on PearPC
.”

Give that link a click-through: it seems that Mihocka’s offer of help was rejected, and that our man was a little offended by that rejection.

Meanwhile, the reaction on Watters’ forum is mixed; Mike “Jackalo” Kolassa says, “I think Darek should go for it,” while Watters’ himself thinks that “if PearPC is dead, Darek can only pork it.”
