I second what Ronald says -- there's a reason regular software and users no longer have that kind of access to the hardware, and it's because malicious software started taking advantage of those permissions.

However, VirtualBox does this somehow, so there must be a way (I haven't seen VB messing with privilege escalation -- maybe this is what the kext is for?).

I figure that while we probably don't want to be writing a helper kext for SheepShaver/BII, maybe some of us should figure out how to leverage VirtualBox's existing framework for disk IO. Since the licenses are compatible, the code could probably even be rolled in.
