vMac on OpenSTEP 4.2 try

Post by galgot »

Hi,
Ok, I know it's ... bad to ask for a ROM file.
But don't know were to ask, and I've tried all possible ROM files from known sources...
I'm looking for a ROM file that would work with vMac on OpenSTEP 4.2.
vMac needs a MacPlus ROM , I've found online three versions,
Rev 1, 2 and 3. I don't know if there are more.
Anyway these I have doesn't work, vMac saying :
"vMac.ROM loaded successfully, but we don't support this ROM yet."
see screenshot :

Any ideas ?

Search for "A collection of old world Macintosh ROM files"

High in the search results will be a link to a "GitHub - macmade" page. The Mac-Plus.ROM in that collection should work fine in Mini vMac (after being renamed vMac.ROM).

(I do not know if or how Mini vMac will run on OpenSTEP 4.2.)

Thanks, I didn’t know that source.
Still it didn’t work… keep saying « …don't support this ROM yet."
even tho it’s a MacPlus ROM.

it's the old vMac emulator, not Mini vMac.
Still available here :
http://www.leb.net/vmac/download/

The .app wouldn't do anything when double-clicked, but if I cd into the .app and do ./vMac, it runs.
Another problem seems to be that I don’t have the proper vMac.cfg file.

The vMac README file says :

« 3. Installing vMac
------------------
Create a separate directory for vMac and copy the vMac binary and
vMac.cfg in there. You have to have a ROM in a file taken from a real
Macintosh Plus in order to use the emulator. »

I suppose the Rom path is specified in that vMac.cfg file, together with the disk path. Problem , I don't have that vMac.cgf file... And I don't know how it looks like.
Only found info on this Japanese site, it gives hints on what should be in that file :
http://homepage3.nifty.com/toshi3/mac/vmav03.html

Still tried to do my own vMAc.cfg, like this :
QDHack = 2
Ramsize = 4
Sound = 1
DrivePath1 = System7.dsk
rom = vMac.ROM

but it’s incomplete…
