Help!

Q: Help! I'm at this page and I have no idea what it is about!?

A: If you don't know what it's about, you shouldn't be here. No... no... that's not a good attitude to have. This site is devoted to the emulation of 68k and PowerPC Apple Macintosh computers on the (mainly) Intel (x86) platform, including Windows, Linux, BeOS and OS/2 and MacOS.

Q: Well, that's cool. What can I run?

A: Until a few years ago, the only software we could run in emulators was software for 68k Macintosh computers, using emulators such as BasiliskII and SoftMac. However in 2003 and 2004, two new PowerPC emulators were released, SheepShaver and PearPC. SheepShaver can emulate a PPC Mac running upto MacOS 9 and PearPC can emulate a G4 Mac running either Linux or MacOSX meaning lots of newer software can be emulated as well. It is worth checking the forums to find out what software is supported by all the emulators as not everything will run.

Q: Hey, it says I need something called a ROM and I can't find one on your page. Where do I get one?

A: The distribution of ROM images (and maybe even using them outside of Mac computers) is illegal. This means that we cannot distribute them. However, there is a good guide on how to extract the ROM image from your old Mac, here. ROMs for 68k emulators *may* be avaliable for download online, but we cannot link to them. ROMs for SheepShaver can be obtained from Apple's website or from a MacOS installation CD-ROM. PearPC and Executor do not require ROMs.

Q: I can't get [insert emulator here] to work. What am I doing wrong?

A: You could e-mail us and we may have the answer, but your best bet would be to visit The E-Maculation forums and ask your question there. You will get the quickest response time and get knowledge pooled from MANY Mac emulation experts.

Q: I need more help! Where else can I go?

A: There are lots of articles on the E-Maculation site that may help. Each emulator has a page dedicated to it. These pages can be accessed by the links on the right hand side of this page. These emulator pages contain links to downloads, step by step guides and official websites. You could also check out our articles page which has lots of background information, benchmarks and interviews with the developers.

Q: How do I get started running my old Mac software on my PC?

A: E-Maculation has an excellent beginners guide to setting up System 7.5.5 in the most recent version of Basilisk II. Read it over here.

Q: I can't run my MacOS 9 apps on my shiny new Intel Mac! Can you help?

A: We certainly can! SheepShaver is avaliable for running older PPC applications on any PPC/Intel MacOSX system. SheepShaver is a good replacement for Apple's discontinued Classic Environment. If you are in a situation where you have older PPC software which you need to run on an Intel Mac or a PPC Mac running Mac OSX 10.5/Leopard, this article may be worth a read. BasiliskII is also avaliable for MacOSX should you need to run 68k software on a new Mac.
