Alternatives

There are several alternatives to using traditional emulators. The major alternative, Executor, has been given its own section on this webpage. For your everyday Windows experience, you may wish to use Macintosh "Look and Feel" desktop enhancments. A new commercial product, ObjectBar (formerly MacVision), has been released in beta via Stardock's Object Desktop. It promises to be a complete Windows "Start Bar" replacement. It is fully skinnable to offer a Macintosh look. A free alternative to this is WinMac, which at this time, offers users only a Macintosh menu bar in OS 7.x/8.1/8.5/9.0/X styles.

If you are a vMac user, you may wish to explore the use of WORM. WORM emulates a Mac Plus, but functions much better. It was created by the author of Gemulator and SoftMac to show up the vMac team. The only downside to this emulator is that it does not support sound, and is no longer updated.

Another emulator availble is called EmMac. Not too much is known about this emualator, other than the fact that it was created by Ciobbo Giuseppe. All documentation is in Italian, with no English version forthcoming. EmMac does not seem to emulate even System 7.x. Unless you are a diehard emulation grognard, you can forget about using this one.

MACE, short for "Macintosh Application Compatibility Environment," is the most promising in-development Macintosh emulator at this moment. Its author, Weston Pawlowski, plans to develop it as functionally similar to ARDI's Executor, allowing it to operate without a Macintosh ROM image. Progress has been slow to date, but some has been made.

Other "in development" emulators which have shown little, if no progress to date, include "eMac," "BLH," and "Mac PPCx86."
