Ah... then perhaps:

6- He's using this wireless ISP, which is configured as a giant private network, so all outbound hosts have the hostname of the network's main router. (I don't know if this is the normal way these types of network operate, seems a bit unwise to me.)

I understand where you're coming from. Given that it's a 'www.*.com' hostname, I'd tend to think it's a safer bet for an IP ban. Possible scenarios: 1- He's got a domain-name pointed at his home machine/network (most likely). This is still possible with a dynamic-IP connection, but slightly impracti...

Remember what I said in your "Being an admin is cool!" thread - you might be banning someone else once he cycles his ISP connection. One way to get a hint of whether he's on static or dynamic IP is this: if the server logs it, check the hostname he came from. Dynamic IP connections' hostna...

I seem to remember a third-party app with the same functionality, called WinGate I think. Anyone remember this?

EDIT: yup, there it is - http://www.wingate.com/

To be honest I don't even remember having ICS in Win98 (not that I would have used it back then). Is it an optional component on the disk, or an addon download from MS? I found it fairly user-friendly on XP, although I agree it has its limitations (being restricted to an arbitrary subnet of 192.168....

I've helped a friend sort out his wireless network, and I'm currently trying to set up a network like this Win98 PC with ethernet card -----> Wireless access point -----> Mac with OSX10.2 but that's proving a little difficult. I won't have to do this though when I get a proper ethernet modem and a ...

It's pretty easy if you have a dynamic IP with your ISP account.

Disconnect...reconnect...done.

If a spammer uses the same ISP as me (and is part of teh same IP pool), next time I connect I might be banned!

Hi, and welcome to E-Maculation! First let me see if I understand your problem correctly. Your wireless router only supports DHCP for its clients, and your guest OS (the one running in PearPC) is not able to be configured by it? You should be using Internet Connection Sharing in your host OS - then ...

Browser testing for web design. Internet Explorer for Mac is so weird in how it renders pages, you can't afford not to check your work with it (until it completes its slow, painful descent into obscurity, anyhoo - MUA-HA-HAAAH). Likewise, Safari has a few unique kinks. Although it's related to Konqu...

This looks promising. I hope it leads to a benchmark good enough to whip up the media all over again, and exorcise the lingering bad taste that SherryTrifleOS left in the mouth.

Microsoft must be convinced that Apple has the necessary expertise to stop hackers running Windows on their Whiteboxes. You meant Mac OS there, right? Incedently, I don't think MS would lock Windows out from being able to run on MacIntel. If you buy a Mac and install Windows, it benefits both Apple...

I didn't vote, as the question doesn't specify good or bad for whom. For Apple: given how many people are hot for multi-OS systems as a practical measure these days, it could be very good for them. There will soon be the option to have a high-performance machine that multi-boots OS X and any number ...

Of course - that's why it is their masterstroke. They probably can't stop teh h4XX0r from circumventing whatever protection they use (ROM, BIOS, hardware dingly-dongle or whatever). No doubt in my mind about that. But your custom whiteboxen with hacked OS X86 will not be supported. A lot of people d...

Memory is hazy, but I'm sure someone (either here or 'over there') mentioned TechTV/G4TV being where they first heard about PearPC, and the presenter was called Kevin Rose. Some or all of this could be apocryphal.

The emulator bit is interesting. So Intel have their own emulator, on a chip? And it has (speculatively) only a 4-7% performance hit?

So when it comes to clients sometimes not getting teh DNS, is this just down to the quirks of the router? Like whether or not it will act as a DNS server for all clients, including non-DHCP ones?
