Re: Mac OS 10.6.8 -?
As far as I know the last macbooks to run Snow Leopard where the late 2011 ones. I bought one specifically for that. It seems the 2012 onwards had a piece of firmware blocking installation. Back in the day I read there were some rather painful workarounds. It worked downgrading the firmware, but it ...

Re: Beta version of new Basilisk II GUI
I found an app 'HFSUtilsGUI' on my Mac that I forgot about and that works fine in Catalina for creating HFS (and HFS+) disk images. After a search in the forum I found where it was presented here by our member sentient06 https://www.emaculation.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=8337&p=51502&...

Emulating Mac OS with bespoke components
Hello, I was just wondering... Recently I came across this Mac OS 9 Lives community and I noticed there is an ongoing effort to modify Mac OS 9 by patching new world roms and even some attempts to reverse engineer Mac OS. Take this github user, for example, this is one of his many repositories on th...

Re: Proposition: GUI for QEMU
I suggest considering React Native. It compiles using components native to the OS. You could easily manipulate which controls to be visible and which data they should keep by using something like a JSON file. The end result will be a native OSX application. I reckon Windows and Linux can be used as ...

Re: Interesting idea for a Virtual Machine....
I remember creating a similar topic here before, but focusing on that brazilian macintosh clone that had an "alternative" rom. They pretty much made the same trick Compaq (was it Compaq?) played on IBM many years ago to make PC clones. Some 4 years ago I got curious about that and chased o...

Re: GSOC qemu Boot Mac OS >= 8.5 on PowerPC system
For several reasons, some do not want to upgrade beyond Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) or beyond OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion), though. That's quite correct. Snow Leopard has Rosetta. Good stuff. It runs some old, good software that otherwise never made into Lion. Recently I've been using an application ...

Medusa can kill SS. It doesn't detect it, of course. It is open-source, so feel free to fork it.

Great metaphors/puns!CharlesS wrote: Well, that depends on your definition of "superior." SheepShaver has more bugs than a summer's day in Minnesota, and is more crash-prone than a Formula One racer on meth. But it is fast.
I for one am content to have a slower emulator, if it is reliable.

Good news!Mac OS ROM can be edited in ResEdit! No checksum errors!I changed its "vers" resource to 9.0 and it still works!Though with 9.0 version in System file my 9.0 installation doesn't boot.Had to change it back to 9.0.4. Now I have a plan to convert yet unistallable OSX distros to res...

Re: Preferences manager for OSX
Gentlemen, I'm resurrecting this topic for a while because I have an almost-stable version ready to go. It is slightly easier to use, there were four releases with bug fixes and some polishing and I think I have something to show now. Some requests were implemented, some were delayed, some new stuff...

adespoton, suppose I have several virtual machines in either self-contained wrappers or different config files. Is there a reason why I'd like to keep the xpram file? I want to know if your interest is simply to keep these xpram files separate for each bundle so you don't have to manually remove it ...

Re: Any interest in preserving ancient Mac floppy readers?
Well, there are still some applications out there today for reading mac discs, they are just as expensive as before. I reckon you are talking about HFS readers for PCs, correct? I think some of the current software can do that too even though HFS is disappearing. I don't think that's a case of lack ...

Wow this is cool.. I didn't know about this effort to boot OS 9 in newer Power Macs. I hope they succeed, and it would be awesome to try and emulate these altered versions of OS 9.

Re: Let's document Sheepshaver's code
Hello, allow me to add a shy contribution. I like the way Basilisk II was documented. The document can be found here: http://basilisk.cebix.net/TECH Since SheepShaver and Basilisk II share some components, I'd suggest we shamelessly copy the structure of it and adapt it to fit SheepShaver's descript...

Re: GSOC qemu Boot Mac OS >= 8.5 on PowerPC system
Ultimately, I believe QEMU is a better path of progression, for it is closer to emulating actual Apple PowerPC hardware VS SheepShaver. I do believe though that many people don't understand what the current primary objective of the QEMU project is, an enterprise-grade hypervisor. So we ultimately a...

Yeah, I considered making a whole topic on the Sheepshaver forum dedicated to dissecting its source code. However, considering how much time it takes and there doesn't seem to be a lot of popularity for it, I was hesitant. There are some notes scattered around, but I'm sure that's not the whole thi...

Re: GSOC qemu Boot Mac OS >= 8.5 on PowerPC system
The funny thing is that QEMU (which managed to develop this crap in less than a year) is more stable than a 9 year old emu (SheepShaver) Well, if you consider SS has not been developed for some 8 years, that statement is a little bit unfair. Also, one could argue SS is older than that. I guess SS w...

How long does it take your image to boot to login screen? As installation cd images don't boot far, won't you upload your image file to try it with different qemu/openbios versions? It would be sweet to have some sort of files repository to exchange these types of things.. I wonder if there is a fre...
