Re: USB Dongle in SheepShaver

So... best bet is actually running QEMU-PPC/KVM in Linux, once OS 9 is fully functional. QEMU allows for USB passthrough.

Until then, your best bet is probably to try to locate a crack that bypasses the dongle, or a dongle emulator that'll run in OS 9.

It might be on http://macintoshgarden.org/apps/radius- ... ion-cd-rom

If not, I'll hunt around; I know I had that in an archive somewhere at some point. You may need to ping this thread a few times to remind me :)

Re: My new old iMac DV+ :-)

Reminds me of when I wanted to transfer data from a Color Classic to my iMac DV SE -- the CC was SCSI/ADB, and the iMac was IDE/USB. They had only ONE communication method in common: modem. So I opened up ZTerm on both machines, created a null-modem cable (2nd and 3rd wires flipped), and voila... re...

Re: GSOC qemu Boot Mac OS >= 8.5 on PowerPC system

Yeah, even once the full OS distribution is made bootable, there's still going to be basic things like sound and networking that would probably warrant the devs' attention before there'd be time to get to things like 3D acceleration. 3D games were still pretty nascent during the OS 9 era, anyway; I...

Re: GSOC qemu Boot Mac OS >= 8.5 on PowerPC system

I was wondering when this would come up :D https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=MTI2OTk TL;DR is that QEMU/KVM allows for video passthrough, so if your modern card supports the calls your ancient software is looking for, you should be able to do this on Linux. Unfortunately, vfio-...

Re: My new old iMac DV+ :-)

re: crazy ideas: What I used to do for backups was pop off the case, unplug the DVD cable, and plug it into a spare SATA drive. Then I'd boot everything up with the iMac sitting on its head. Worked great for backup/restore :) Your other ideas should work, although you'll likely need Roxio Toast to r...

Re: My new old iMac DV+ :-)

I used to own the DV SE, which was the big brother of this one. I've still got my final backup from it, so I could definitely provide you some setup recommendations. I got rid of mine just as the DVD-ROM drive started to fail. If you have IEEE1394 in your current computer, you can set the iMac into ...

Re: GSOC qemu Boot Mac OS >= 8.5 on PowerPC system

Good point; Open Transport is likely to do it. It's looking for hardware beyond what is being emulated. QuickTime may also have issues, at least the hardware acceleration extension. Same with the ATi extension. Probably best to disable all extensions that touch external hardware and see if things bo...

Re: GSOC qemu Boot Mac OS >= 8.5 on PowerPC system

gtxaspec: have you tried running the 9.2.2 installer CD while booted from 9.0.4 in SheepShaver? I seem to recall that's how I made my Franken9.2 boot image (ran the installer on a second mounted image, then copied over files from 9.0.4 to overwrite 9.2.2 one by one until the system booted). It's pos...

I've got a stuffed 9.2.2 system folder; not quite sure where to put it for testing. Also not quite sure about its bootability, as I can't recall if it came off of a bare metal install or was archived from a Classic install folder.

Re: GSOC qemu Boot Mac OS >= 8.5 on PowerPC system

Well, that's beyond me; I've got a fairly good knowledge of the early (pre-PPC) toolbox and have written stuff for MacsBug, but PPC-era drivers were something I completely skipped over.

If you wrote extensions for Mac OS 9 and are reading this, please chime in :D

Re: GSOC qemu Boot Mac OS >= 8.5 on PowerPC system

It's a tricky situation for past developers, as having inside knowledge could taint an open source project. It's generally better to do a clean room implementation for legal reasons. That said, for people not on the actual dev team, but who were coding directly against the toolbox and hardware back ...

Re: PrintToPDF output problem ...

Ah; I think I may know what's going on there. Some of the Chooser stuff gets stored in parameter ram. It sounds like the path might be one of those things; SheepShaver sometimes gets into a state where it doesn't save the PRAM correctly, which would explain your issue. Setting up a new memory footpr...

Hmm... I just get http://www.emaculation.com/forum/viewto ... pdf#p42674 from 2012. Looks like most of the discussion is around printing to ps instead of print2pdf specifically. That should link you to the appropriate thread though.

Re: PrintToPDF output problem ...

I believe there was a discussion thread on this last month...? Search for printing. I can't recall what people ended up doing to fix it; I seem to recall that for at least one person, it just started working correctly again after trying all sorts of things.

Re: GSOC qemu Boot Mac OS >= 8.5 on PowerPC system

That's good news though -- the patches have been applied to ppc-next. Code freeze coming soon, which means we'll have this round of fixes rolled in to the main codebase soon.

Time to get back to proper handling of MACSBUG and identifying the still unhandled calls in the boot process :)

Man that brings back memories.... I used to set that flag on hidden games files for people so that if their floppy disk was found by a teacher, their games couldn't be erased. I'd add the invisible flag, and just have it launched via another application (that could be erased, but rebooting would re-...

Re: HFS Disk Maker: Tool for creating HFS disk images

Hey... maybe you could make the "slack space" a user-defined option if you hold down the option key :) That way, you could get rid of it altogether (not a good idea, but hey...) or increase it to whatever value you want by just padding with 0s :)

Re: HFS Disk Maker: Tool for creating HFS disk images

Mac OS wrote a Desktop DB and Desktop DF file (or on earlier OSes, just the Desktop file) to each volume, and this was used to track not only what was in the desktop path, but also all Finder Info comments, and in the Desktop DF case, cached icons as well. Basically, it's where the extended metadata...

Re: HFS Disk Maker: Tool for creating HFS disk images

No, FuseHFS goes through Fuse instead of through the filesystems framework. This means that it can be made available to the OS as a filesystem, but it doesn't present the components to hdiutil in a way that it can do transparent operations and image creation. It should be possible to create a filesy...

Re: HFS Disk Maker: Tool for creating HFS disk images

I can think of two good ways to move this forward... one is to stay OSX-only and make it a filesystem plugin, which would mean that hdiutil would inherit its features and images could be easily mounted read/write in the Finder. The other is to make a platform-independent solution so we can deploy it...

Re: GSOC qemu Boot Mac OS >= 8.5 on PowerPC system

I mean you're going to need to create a regular disk image (not a CD image), mount it, and then restore the CD onto a read/write partition on it. Then you need to ensure that the drive image is bootable and uses the correct partitioning scheme (which differs for older and newer versions of OS X. It'...

Re: GSOC qemu Boot Mac OS >= 8.5 on PowerPC system

For OS X, you'll want to write the CD/DVD to a partition of an uncompressed unencrypted disk image and boot from that. The CD booting is for OS 9.2. That said: has anyone tried booting OS 9.0.4 on the new experimental build of qemu yet? I bet there's some non-MMU stuff we need to get working, and ch...
