Re: Emulating CD Drive for images?
In the OS X host, in the disc image's Get Info window, either set all user permissions to read-only, or check the "Locked" box. Then the emulated Mac OS will consider the volume as read-only. You should really do this with all images of CD-ROMs (Read-Only Memory).

Re: No sound in color 3d games
There has to be some way to have color and sound in Mini vMac, because here it is playing VETTE! perfectly: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NtDgTz2peXw The uploader says in the comments that he used a "very specific build" of Mini vMac, so now I'd like to know what it is. Maybe I'll have t...

Re: No sound in color 3d games
The dates of the games you give are around or before the release of System 7. I too have had problems having no sound in such games, including NetTrek, VETTE!, and others that had updates for use in System 7. So what you should try next is System 6, in Mini vMac. Try the Macintosh II builds that sup...

Re: Trying to install netatalk on OS X
If you want to get this project going quickly, I'd recommend running Netatalk in a Linux distribution such as Debian or Ubuntu (in a virtual machine). These distributions compile and manage the software for you, and as you can see from their package databases ( Debian , Ubuntu ), they're still using...

Re: A little assistance regarding .cue/.bin stuff.
Tracked disc images don't work in SheepShaver. Putting the .bin/.cue files in a .iso just gives you back the .bin/.cue files in the mounted volume, as you saw. What you want to do is convert the data partition (track 1) of the mounted .bin/.cue pair to some non-tracked disc image such as .iso or .to...

Re: Wireless AppleTalk Networking with SheepShaver & Basilis
It turns out that you can run a networked emulator and the OpenVPN server Linux VM on the same computer simultaneously. You simply need to connect the host OS to the OpenVPN server as a client, and then bridge the two TAP interfaces as any other OpenVPN client would. I had tried this before, but I m...

Thanks, Ronald. Yes, it would be nice if I could be granted the ability to edit the first post above as well as my OpenVPN guide indefinitely. I'd like to be able to maintain and update the OpenVPN guide over time for the community.

I've posted my OpenVPN setup guide here:

Also, I'd like to make a lot of changes to my original post, but I don't have an edit button. Is there way I can do this?

Re: Wireless AppleTalk Networking with SheepShaver & Basilis
If you mean OS X Server from the App Store, the VPN in OS X Server is the routed-type (layer 3) and doesn't make use of ethernet bridging. A pre-made Linux virtual machine, or virtual appliance, might be a good idea (someone else could make it based on my instructions and provide a download). And I ...

Re: Wireless AppleTalk Networking with SheepShaver & Basilis
It's not going to be a very "small" guide, that's for sure! I'll want to describe certain things in detail so that newcomers to Linux VMs and networking will not have too much trouble. It'll be something you could link to in the AppleTalk guide. I'll have it up in the next week or so.

Re: Suggestions for the OS X AppleTalk Guide
What I mean by point 3 is that you can remove that entire line from the scripts, not only the IP address and netmask. You don't need ifconfig to "start the tap device," as it says. The emulator does that for you.
Edit: added point 6 to the list.

Suggestions for the OS X AppleTalk Guide
I have some suggestions for the OS X AppleTalk guide : 1. I've been using "classic networking" in Basilisk II, and since pretty much all I want to do in Basilisk II networking-wise is use old AppleTalk programs, this is sufficient. A note could be added to the guide indicating that you can...

Re: The 1 March 2014 Basilisk II Build
Well, really, BasiliskIIGUI is just a GUI that edits a text file. You could add sparsebundles (or anything you want) in it before, it's just that Basilisk II could not actually use them. That's why I'm guessing the 2011 one is just fine. I'm wondering why we've gone to X11 in the new one. As for per...

The 1 March 2014 Basilisk II Build
It seems the BasiliskIIGUI included with the new Basilisk II build requires X11/XQuartz (not mentioned in the post). I'm not a fan of X11, so I assume the BasiliskIIGUI included with the 2011 build will still work. Are there any significant functional changes in this new build of BasiliskIIGUI? Also...

I was wondering if there is a latest/recommended build of SheepShaverLauncher.app, for managing .sheepvm files. I've seen versions in different threads, but can't really tell which one's the latest. Thanks.

Re: Fix for Laggy X-Wing and TIE Fighter
Apple does not allow OS X to be run, virtualized or not, on non-Apple hardware. For this reason, no virtualization software for Windows PCs officially supports OS X guests. So setting up an OS X VM on a Windows PC, with sound and file sharing and all, would involve some skillful hacking, which is pr...

Re: Fix for Laggy X-Wing and TIE Fighter
For the Windows X-Wing series games, use PPJoy to emulate a joystick using a mouse. The latest version can be found, for example, here (ppjoysetup-0-8-4-6.exe). In 64-bit Windows, the machine will have to be restarted to be put into "Test Mode" in order to install and run PPJoy. To get out...

Re: Fix for Laggy X-Wing and TIE Fighter
First off, you're right about the Mac versions being the best. But in case anyone's interested in the Windows 95 remakes, the way to run them in modern 64-bit Windows is to follow the instructions for making a modified installation disc (image) at http://www.markusegger.at. The instructions discuss ...

That's good to hear. I'd highly recommend you edit the Macintosh Garden page with this information. I could do it if you guys don't have accounts there. Re: Getting FrameMaker 7 for Mac to run...
According to the Macintosh Garden page for FrameMaker 7.0, this program does not run under emulation. Since it seems to be a classic Mac OS, non-carbonized application, there's probably no way to run it on an Intel Mac.

For Descent and Descent II, see dxx-rebirth.com. From there, you can get an updated .app that runs the games' original files in OS X. For in-game music, see my comment on Descent's page at the Macintosh Garden. Also, I found interesting that there is this program called "The Unarchiver", a...

Sometimes programs that worked on 68k Macintoshes don't work in Basilisk II. I would try it in SheepShaver.
