What is the easiest way of being able to display Japanese text in OS 9?

Is there a Japanese Sheep Saver image?

Or is it built in?

Currently I see (contents of a .sit.bin archive that was extracted within Sheep Shaver)

You will need to install "Language Kits". It is not installed by the default OS installation.

When you run the OS9 installer and select your existing OS9 disk as Destination Disk, you can choose to add or remove software features. Click the "Add/Remove" button. You can choose to only install the "Language Kits".

Thanks! I followed your directions.

I get language input menu and can see Japanese in Text control panel.

Filenames and menu/app text are displayed differently, but still not as required.

I extracted the sit again just in case. No change.

I'm seeing this:

I do not know how to use Japanese in the Finder. Geneva will not contain Japanese characters. I suppose that a different font needs to be chosen to display (also) Japanese in file names in the Finder.

You have to set "Control Panels -> Appearance -> Fonts -> Views Font" to Osaka.

If you can read Japanese, refer following site.

Thank you very much

0. Language Kits as previously described
1. Osaka Font fixed Finder
2. Language Register to set Japanese on a per-app basis fixed Menus/Game

I'm sorry for reviving this, but I'm having a related issue. I've installed the Japanese language kit, but the fonts aren't showing up in the menu when I got to change the views font in the control panel. The fonts are installed, and I can see them in the fonts section of the system folder, they just don't appear when I use the control panel, and I can't make the game or files properly display.

Did you restart (or quit and relaunch SheepShaver) after installing the language kit?

Yes, I did. As far as I could tell there was no real difference though. The installation logs claim that the fonts are there and they appear in the system folder, so were properly installed to the disk I told it to install to as far as I could tell, but don't appear in the fonts section of the appearance control panel.

I think you haven't done everything that you need to.

Below I have summarised the required steps:
1. install "Language Kits"
= gain language input menu
= see Japanese in Text control panel

2. set "Control Panels -> Appearance -> Fonts -> Views Font" to Osaka
= see Japanese in Finder

3. Use "Language Register" to set Japanese on a per-app basis
= see Japanese in app menus and windows
Did you do each of the three steps?
Did the your actual results match the expected results listed above?
