Prebuilt SheepShaver image for download

I've made a 500 mb Macintosh disk image for SheepShaver, including _everything_ needed to run, as well as an installation of the last version of WordPerfect for the Mac, and several useful utilities. The printing issue with USB has been solved: this configuration prints to any OSX printer as fast as regular printing, or makes a PDF file.

The download link is at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/wordperfectmac, in the Links section, in the "SheepShaver and Basilisk" folder, as "SheepShaver-WordPerfect Install (2)".

Runs on both Intel and PPC Macs. Several people on the WP group are using it, and it's working well for them.

Enjoy,
John

This is now on a faster server. So far, it seems to work for everyone.

It is now even announced on VersionTracker:

Doesn't this distribution of SheepShaver, complete with ROM file and disk image with installed MacOS, violate several licence agreements?

The OS and ROM file are free downloads from Apple. SheepShaver is free under GNU. What licence agreements were you thinking of?

If it is the ROM file that was from Apple's site, then that is fine.

All MacOS versions higher than 7.5.5 are still not free and therefore it is illegal to distribute such versions. Anything 7.5.5 or lower is fine though.

I don't know what version of the MacOS is installed in this, but if it is 7.5 then the fact that it is installed and that a ROM file is included, rather than downloaded by the user from Apple's website might cause problems, but should be OK.

I just do not think that the SheepShaver 1.0 thing on VersionTracker is suitable though as it is misleading. If there are going to be such distributions then it should be "SheepShaver[version] + whatever software compliled by whoever", as that page suggests that the version of SheepShaver is 1.0, which it isn't, and that SheepShaver is supposed to have MacOS, which it isn't, and that it was made by someone other than Gwenole B.

The download includes an installer that installs all necessary files: SheepShaver and SheepShaverGUI (version 2.3 by Gwenole), a ROM file, a disk image with System 7.5.5 and WP installed on it.

The ROM file is not OK, because it is the file as extracted from Mac OS ROM Update 1.0. Distribution of the extracted file is a violation of the licence agreement that you have to agree with before you can mount the disk image with the updater.

The installed System 7.5.5 is not OK. The installation disks can be download freely from Apple's site, but distribution as installed system within another software offering is a clear violation of the licence agreement that you have to agree with before you can install the system.

In VersionTracker, which is the number 1 site for Mac software releases, this "SheepShaver 1.0" is now the only SheepShaver version listed (see link in my previous posting) and it is listed as a product by John Rethorst:

This does not feel right.

Yeah, just because something is available for free download somewhere, doesn't give you the right to distribute it in some modified form just because you can.

What would be legal, however, is to make a custom app that doesn't come with this stuff, but that pulls the files from the original locations and installs them in the right places. However, that would not be an easy task.

Does this prebuilt image (and os 7.5) work with tcp/ip (via basilisk ii, ethernet or slirp)? I am trying without luck to get any old Netscape version on OS 7.5, using this image, to run. But there is not even a TCP/IP icon in the control panel on this pre-built 7.5 image.

Hi,

Welcome! I believe you need to use the network selection software (which should be included in a full 7.5.x install) to switch to TCP/IP networking in Mac OS 7.5.x

The package you are referring to is not created nor maintained by us. You can ask questions on the site of the wordperfect user group.

Best,

Direct links to the relevant software can't be posted here, but if you run this search

WPMacApp

you'll find software that does the job.

Also, the WordPerfectMac user group has moved here:
