The GUI lost its glamor at 10.10...

It is so dry and uninviting now.

Apple shot itself in the foot...

Who made that call?

Who thinks the 3d interface should be brought back?

Who noticed linking with social networks was a bad idea?

Who pointed out the continued use of unsigned software was dangerous?

Where did the sensibility go in macOS design?

What replacements are qualified to take the place of Jordan Hubbard and the like?

Hmm...

You're preaching to the choir. However, I'd say the GUI lost an awful lot with the transition from 8.6 to OS X; the spatial Finder was a thing of beauty.

Jobs broke the HIG at NeXT, and then imported the flawed mechanisms into OS X, and attempted to cover it up with a shiny UI. Then when Google boldly went with a new non-skeumorphic design, Apple foolishly followed, but never bothered to fix the HIG issues left over from NeXT.

The end result was something both functionally and visually broken.

Sad thing is, it's still one of the best mainstream OSes out there.

For what could have been the future of the Macintosh, I give you https://www.haiku-os.org
