Can't install Mac OS X 10.4

Hello.

Recently I found TOASTs of all 4 CDs of 10.4, installed the minimal system from CD 1, booted to the hard disk, installed everyting from CD 2, but I ran into a problem with CD 3.

I switch the disk to CD 3, it goes back into console (Verbose mode), says that the Login Window started and... crashes the Installer. When I restart the installer, it again asks for CD 2, installs everything from it, asks for CD 3, and, after inserting, goes back to crashing.

Hmm... I always use the DVD.

Is it possible to just install the minimal system and then do a software update to get the rest?

I don't know. But I need to solve the installation issue, never worked with Software Update. In fact, I never installed any software on my Mac OS X guests, so it will be a pain for me to do this.

I recommend grabbing a copy of the DVD image and doing things that way. Or, just going with https://archive.org/details/macostiger and skipping the install.

Where do I get a DVD image? I tried one - invalid password at archive. Tried second - downloaded Mac OS 9.2.2. Tried third - downloaded some "setup" at archive from suspicious website.

Might be you need dmg2img to convert the image so it becomes bootable.

Well, it's not plain 10.4, it 10.4.6. In fact, my plan is install every Mac OS X in existence, that's why I bought a 512 GB external SSD.

Tiger 10.4.6 installs easily using Cat_7's recommendation above.

I used UltraISO to convert the DMG file to ISO.

I hate to break it to you... you'll never get to the point of installing every OS X in existence.

I've got a 512GB SSD where I have my Mac OS archive. It's currently sitting at around 420GB used, and I've only got the .0 and latest release builds. And this is complicated by the fact that there were different point releases for different hardware, and not all of those configurations are currently emulated.

If you're having difficulties getting your hands on .0 universal install DVDs, you're not going to be getting anywhere near the point where you've got every OS X in existence running via emulation/virtual machine.

For Mac OS X 10.4, the key releases are 10.4.6, 10.4.7, and 10.4.11 -- 10.4.7 and 10.4.11 come in PPC and X86 formats.
