QEMU Mouse Not Responding

Post by StellarExile »

Hello all,
I'm completely new to QEMU. I'm trying to run an old game on my laptop (AirBurst Extreme https://www.macintoshrepository.org/517 ... st-extreme) and I've installed QEMU successfully but when I try to install Mac OS [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bltM3h6Kqx8&t=224s][/according to this guide] the mouse gets stuck and does not respond. Does anyone know if there is a way past it, or if there is a better way of running the game? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

That might be caused by having "mac99,via=pmu" in your command line, and not, as suggested, "mac99"
But we can't be sure, so please copy the contents of your qemu.command file in your reply.

Hey Cat_7,
Thank you very much for the reply. Unfortunately, I was informed by 24bit that Airburst Extreme does not run under QEMU due to missing GPU support. In the reply, 24 told me it worked fine under Apple's Rosetta. I've heard about Rosetta and that it's discontinued and I'm wondering if there is still any way to download it.
Thanks for the help!

Rosetta was introduced as part of the MacOSX 10.4.4 (Tiger) for Intel installation. It was used to ease the transition from PPC to Intel. Rosetta enabled running most PPC software seamlessly in MacOSX on Intel. The latest OS version that it can be installed on and used with is MacOSX 10.6 (Snow Leopard).

Maybe I spoke too early and someone here could try AE with QemuPPC and OSX 10.3?
The game is not working with an Intel 10.5 / Rosetta virtual machine in VMWare Fusion, however.
My Core2 Duo Hackintosh (AMD HD5450) plays it fine with 10.6 / Rosetta, a real working GPU seems to be the must have.

Just for the records, the game is hosted here since 2014: https://macintoshgarden.org/games/airburst-extreme

Edit:
What about Airburst (Classic) which is less demanding GPU wise?
Also here since 2014: https://macintoshgarden.org/games/airburst-classic
The game is loading with QemuPPC MacOS 9.2, but the mouse is too jumpy to be usable -
could be a problem on my side though - T420 Mojave Hackintosh.
The game seems to be playable on my side in VMWare with OSX 10.5.
Just keep an eye on the core temps. GPU emulation does stress your CPU.

Maybe. Was there anywhere specific you got Rosetta?
Thanks

Rosetta was part of OSX up to 10.6 Snow Leopard.
I did try with 10.5 as I have a running instance anyway.
To install 10.5 or 10.6 on a modern Mac, you want a virtualisation engine like VirtualBox or VMWare Fusion.
To install OSX, the Server version is needed. https://macintoshgarden.org/apps/mac-os-x-server-105

Snow Leopard Server did run fine in Catalina on my side, but I did remove it again to save some SSD space.
There is not much difference between VMWare and VirtualBox performance wise, as far as I can tell.
VMWare is more Mac like maybe, VirtualBox is free from Oracle.

Edit:
Just tried again and yes, Airburst (not Airburst Extreme) can be run in Snow Leo Server in VirtualBox on a Catalina host.
VirtualBox 6.1 does not offer shared folders for OSX 10.6. Files may be copied over via a USB drive though.
