teachtext won't open

Post by starfiretbt »

I have been experimenting with mini vMac however my text files won't open. I hear I need teachtext for vMac however when I expand it and drag the file onto vMac nothing happens. I tried adding teachtext using HFVExplorer to add the file to my .dsk but it still doesn't seem to recognize the file.
I tried the 2nd DL Mini vMac ready-to-go from https://macintoshgarden.org/apps/mini-vmac-ready-go as that seems to be the only one I can get working on pc as the other ones don't seem to have apps that my pc recognizes. That worked for a while, but when I tried transferring my games from my mini vMac to the ready-to-go vMac the ability to read text files stopped.
Is there a teachtext program that can read and write text files as well as load into mini vMac? Or even a simpletext?

Maybe try this bootable image (2. DL): https://macintoshgarden.org/apps/system-6-collection
See folder Utilities for TeachText and BBEdit Lite.
BBEdit will open almost everything readable and you may have multiple documents opened at one time.
Saving files always worked for me with BBEdit.

SimpleText should do too, its included here with System 7.5.3:

That worked perfectly, thank you. So just to clarify instead using the 024M.dsk that I created in the setup guide I just have to use this System6 file and it will function the same as a .dsk? Because so far it runs exactly like my boot-able disk. Also do I need the __MACOSX folder for anything? But in summery everything is working exactly as I wanted it so thanks again.

EDIT: Okay I see I still need the .dsk file to download games into mini vMac and from there I can transfer them to the System6 file. This won't cause any problems will it?

Exactly. You may use the System 6.img (or the MacOS7.5.3.dsk) as you wish.
__MACOSX is a left over of the default OSX/maOS Zip app, which should be deleted.
The file is invisible with OSX btw.
Sorry for using a proprietary zip app, better solutions are available, just not that convenient.

You may also copy over wanted apps to your boot volume, if you prefer running them there.
The default MiniVMac may open six volumes at a time, if my memory serves.
