Softmac ROMS

Post by slichtman »

Hi everyone. I installed Windows XP on Oracle Virtualbox and am fully networked. I am unable to get softmac to read my roms. Any tips here? It errors out when I launch "unable to read rom"

There is exactly one active SoftMac user on the forum (you) so it might be hard to get support here. But what ROMs are you using?

I am not glued to softmac, but what I am looking for is SCSI emulation ;). I used to do a lot of security pen testing and have a lot of experience with SCSI encryption ;). I need a playground. Any emulator other than softmac that can create scsi partitions? If so lead the way ;)

The roms came from a couple archives I found on the net. mac-rom-archive-20110819. BTW these roms work in Basallisk and have that working minus the missing SCSI ;(

Thank you

Well, I haven't run SoftMac since about 2008. But maybe try experimenting with more ROM images. The Internet Archive has a massive collection you can download.

And did you follow the instructions to select the ROM detailed in this guide - https://www.emaculation.com/doku.php/softmac_setup ?

There are some SoftMac users over at the Macintosh Garden right now; one of the original developers even showed up recently to discuss issues some were having.

You might find these links useful too:

Are you using the original SoftMac, or SoftMac XP? I use SoftMac XP semi-regularly under WINE specifically for the SCSI emulation. The built-in help has always been enough for me to get the correct ROM/Gestalt combo to boot any given OS version.

No, it was someone else who worked with him who had access to the source code. Can't remember who. Haven't heard from Darek in years.

Well that's interesting. I always thought Emulators, Inc was a one-man shop after Ig Kolenko left (before the development of SoftMac).

Come to think of it... so did I. I'll have to hunt down those comments and see who it was that was claiming source access.
