There's also an "official" setup guide for Mac in MAME now, which is up to date with the emulation changes over the last year or so.

A few updated resources:
For emulating Apple I, II, ///, and 680x0 Macs on modern Macs (including Apple Silicon; I'm typing this on my brand new M3 Max and it's indeed scary fast), there's a friendly GUI called Ample that you can get from

If you have Mini vMac or Basilisk II format hard disk images and would like to convert them to the real hardware format that MAME and DingusPPC use (along with SCSI emulators used on real hardware like SCSI2SD, BlueSCSI, and ZuluSCSI), Disk Jockey can do that:
https://diskjockey.onegeekarmy.eu/ Disk Jockey can also create new blank hard disks easily for doing a fresh OS install from a CD image.

BTW, is it possible to rename this thread to show "MAME"? MESS hasn't been updated since May of 2015 when MAME integrated it.

I couldn't find Ample listed on the Driver:Mac_68K page -- so I figured I'd link to the releases page here:

Worth noting that Ample comes with the MAME executable bundled, so if you've got
