Installing games on Mini Vmac Prince of Persia 1 and 2

Post by IPJ126 »

I have tried installing Mini Vmac on my Intel Mac, and can't seem to figure out how to install games from a sit file or the actual game file of a game. I am trying to install Prince of Persia 1 and 2, (because I heard somewhere on here Prince of Persia 2 runs with normal speed music on Mini Vmac.) I have tried dragging the game or sit file into Mini Vmac, and it always gives me an error. I have figured out from reading on here, that the file has to be in a "dsk" file for it to work. Anyone know how to change a sit file to a dsk file on Mac? Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks!

Did you see the European CD version of PoP here?

I did just add a DC6 image for you as 2nd DL, so you may drop that onto a working MiniVMac screen to mount.
Sadly the manual is German, no idea how your German is. ;)
You will need MiniVMacII for running the game in color.

A MacOS 7.5.3 bootable image is here BTW: http://macintoshgarden.org/apps/macos-753-emulators
Both for MiniVMac and MiniVMacII.

As far as installing software from .sit files goes, there are a few methods: there's an hfs disk maker linked in these forums; just drag the folder over it, and it'll create an HFS (not HFS+) disk image you can drag over the Mini vMac window to mount it. Then you just run Stuffit Expander within the Mini vMac guest environment to decompress the sit file.

Alternatively, you can download ImportFL which runs within Mini vMac, and lets you import any file from the host system while the Application is running inside Mini vMac.

We should probably get these two methods on the wiki if we haven't, as they are the two easiest :)

I've also been tempted to bug Paul to convert ImportFL and ExportFL into a fake Localtalk share extension a la UNIX folder in BII and SS.

I added the importfl method to the latest version of the setup guide in the wiki. It was a long overdue addition.

Thanks so much! I've gotten as far as getting the Prince of Persia 2 sit file onto Mini Vmac, but I can't un stuff it. I am using stuffit expander 4.0.1 from the gryphon website, and when I try to open the Prince of Persia 2 sit file with stuffit, stuffit doesn't even see it, the sit file. It's like it's not even there (prince of persia 2 sit file). By the way I have Prince of Persia 2 sit file located in my System 6 hard drive. Any ideas? Is there another version of stuffit expander that works with system 6?
Thanks!

Er, I don't think PoP 1 or 2 work with System 6... best to get 7.5.3 installed.

[edit] Also, they're both in color. If you're using Mini vMac, use the MacII version so you can use 800x600 mode in colour instead of 312x420 in B&W.

Ok, thanks anyway! I already have Sheepshaver with 9.0.4, and Basilisk II with 7.5.3 installed, just thought running Prince of Persia 2 on Mini Vmac would run the music at normal speed. Oh well, I'll take what I can get! Thank you anyways!

Mini vMacII has full speed audio now; I highly recommend you give it a try!

Ok, just one question. If I install Prince of Persia 2 on Mini Vmac ii, will the music run at full correct speed? I mean does it not run like Sheepshaver or Basilisk ii, with Prince of Persia 2 music running really slow?

It might sound a bit clipped, as it's still under emulation, but Paul worked on the sound emulation a lot recently, so it's probably the best you're going to get for a MacII-era emulator right now. The other ones to try would be PCE/Mac (which is B&W) or FUSION.

In Mini Vmac and in SheepShaver you can use the same hdd image as in Basilisk II.
