Can't install Mac OS 8.6

Post by vlad557776 »

Hello. Recently I tried to get all old MacOSes working. But, at Mac OS 8.6, I ran into a problem: I'm getting very strange error. Here's the exact text: There is not enough memory to open "Mac OS Install" (zero K needed, zero K available). To make more memory available, try quitting "". I'm using SheepShaver and OldWorld ROM. Can anybody help me?

What kind of installer are you using for MacOS 8.6?
If installing from a CD image, make sure the disk image is locked by the host OS.
I don´t recall any issues with 8.6, but made my installations many years ago from my personal CDs in OSX 10.6. ;)

I'm using an ISO I took from WinWorld. I don't know what is "locked by the host OS",

Which is your host OS (Windows or OSX/macOS)? And which version?

Which SheepShaver version and build (date) do you use?

My host OS is Windows 10 1803. My SheepShaver is 2.3.

Did you follow the setup guide in our wiki?

Well, I did all the things I found at the guide, except ROM change (I'm still using OldWorld ROM because SheepShaver crashes with the new ROM), and now I'm getting error -39.

I never heard of the new world rom crashing SheepShaver.

Error -39: -39 eofErr End of file; no additional data in the format
That seems to indicate an incomplete file. Maybe the iso file is corrupted?

I myself use SheepShaver only on OSX/macOS hosts. I think someone experienced with SheepShaver setup on Windows can better help you further.

I think that's RAM compatibility problem, because it only showed up when I allocated 128 MB of RAM. And I also think that New World ROM is crashing SheepShaver because I'm using Mac OS 8.5 boot diskette to run this. Plus I have only WinWorld where I can find these Mac OSes and my copy is the only copy I found there.

Edit: Do someone know why the hell I can open this ISO with WinRar and I can't do the same with every other ISO?

If the iso is a disk image created from a MacOS 8.6 install disk, you can boot SheepShaver from it. You should not need to use a separate boot disk.

Tried that a few times. No matter what config I use, I'm still getting "no bootable device" icon.

Better find a different Mac OS 8.6 Universal install disk image. You can find several if you search the internet. SheepShaver will recognize not only .iso images but also for instance .toast images.

Found a copy, but it's in MacBinary (.BIN) format. Do anyone know how to decrypt in into a normal .TOAST?

What about this download? http://macintoshgarden.org/apps/mac-os-85-851-update #8
You will get a zipped .toast file. Unzip and add it to the SheepShaver volumes GUI.
You may rename .toast to .iso without harm, but SheepShaver does recognise both toast and iso.
Again, make sure the CD image is read only, either from the SheepShaver prefs or from Windows.

After successful boot you double click the 8.6 icon and should see this:

From there you should install MacOS 8.6 to an empty e.g. 2GB volume.
