Manual: How to migrate COI/Chubby Bunny to a regular SheepShaver setup

Post by Ronald P. Regensburg »

The application Classic on Intel / Chubby Bunny was distributed under different names. In this manual I will mostly refer to it as "COI".

Get your startup disk

1. First of all, you need to get the startup image from within COI:

Download the "Classic-on-Intel-Extractor" script droplet that our member emendelson kindly created for this purpose:
https://www.emaculation.com/sheepshaver ... ractor.zip

(If not yet done automatically, expand the archive to get the script. I will not repeat this again in this manual for other downloads. Zip archives need to be expanded.)

Open the folder where your COI application resides. The application wil be named 'Classic' or 'COI (Classic-On-Intel) V4.0.1 "Chubby Bunny"'.
(If the name is not one of these two names, the script will not work. Ask how to proceed.

Drag and drop the Classic or COI/Chubby Bunny application icon onto the script droplet icon. If this works as intended, an image file "Classic HD.dmg" will appear on your desktop. It is a copy of the startup disk that is buried inside the COI application.
(The first time the script is used, you may be asked to allow the script to open.)

Downloads

2. Search the web for "redundant robot sheepshaver" (without the quotes). On the Redundant Robot site, find the "New World PPC ROM" download link. Download that file. When unzipped, it will be named "newworld86.rom". Select the icon and hit Command-I. The Finder Info panel for the file will appear. Under "Name & Extension" edit the file name to "Mac OS ROM" (without the quotes and without the file name extension).

3. Download both the recommended SheepShaver build and the SheepShaver folder from this topic in the SheepShaver forum: http://www.emaculation.com/forum/viewto ... =20&t=7360

Organise you SheepShaver folder

4. Place the downloaded SheepShaver folder where it suits you, it can be anywhere you like.

5. Move all these files into the SheepShaver folder:
- The SheepShaver application
- The rom file Mac OS ROM
- The startup disk image Classic HD.dmg
- Additional disk image files you may have used with COI in the /Users/Shared/ folder:
  • Disk image files used with COI can be:
    400Meg.dmg
    800Meg.dmg
    1200Meg.dmg
  • Less usual are these disk image files. If you used them, ask how to proceed.
    MyOldHD.dmg
    COIHD.dmg
Note that disk image files that were distributed with the COI application but were never moved to the /Users/Shared/ folder, were never used by COI and do not need to be moved to the SheepShaver folder.

Create and organise a new shared folder

COI uses the /Users/Shared/ folder for the shared folder/Unix feature in SheepShaver. It is better to use a separate folder:

6. Create your shared folder in a convenient place that can be easily accessed. Give the folder an appropriate name.

7. Move to your new shared folder from /Users/Shared/:
- The folder "Desktop Folder"
- Other files or folders you were using with Shared/Unix that may still be there
(Not the disk image files mentioned above that should go into the SheepShaver folder.)
Leave other files and folders where they are.

Remove the COI configuration

Before you can set up SheepShaver, you need to remove the old configuration:

8. Run the two scripts that you will find in the SheepShaver folder to delete both the prefs file and the nvram file.
(After this you should not launch COI anymore, because that will again create those files with content that is specific to COI.)

Configure SheepShaver

Now you are ready to configure SheepShaver. Here is the setup manual:
http://www.emaculation.com/doku.php/she ... os_x_setup
But you can skip the first part of the setup manual about collecting all the needed files and start with the section "Configuring SheepShaver":
https://www.emaculation.com/doku.php/sh ... heepshaver

I use here the numbering as used in this section of the setup manual:

1. Start SheepShaver
Follow the manual.

2. Open Preferences from SheepShaver application menu
Follow the manual.

3. Configure preferences in Setup tab
This part is different, specifically for the volumes list, as you will not install a new system but instead you will add the volumes (disk images) used in COI.

ROM File
First add the ROM file name using the “Browse…” button to find and “Open” the "Mac OS ROM" file.

Volumes
Use the "Add..." button to find and "Open" your "Classic HD.dmg" image file. The file will appear at the top of the volumes list.
Next add in the same way your additional image files, 400Meg.dmg etc., one by one. These files will appear in the list below the "Classic HD.dmg".

Unix Root
Add the path to your shared folder using the second “Browse…” button to find and “Open” the folder you created to be the shared folder. (In the example picture I used a folder named “Shared” on my desktop.)

Do not keep the default value “/”, that setting would make your entire hard disk the shared folder.

RAM Size (MB)
Enter a value for the amount of RAM that the virtual Mac will have, for instance 256 or 512 (COI used 256 MB)

Boot From
Leave it set to “Any”.

Disable CD-ROM
Leave the box unchecked.

Follow the setup manual for the remaining items in the "Configuring SheepShaver" chapter:

4. Configure preferences in Audio / Video tab
5. Configure preferences in Miscellaneous tab
6. Save your settings
7. Quit SheepShaver

You are now ready to use SheepShaver in the new configuration. When you launch SheepShaver again, you will see your familiar desktop.

You can change settings in the SheepShaver preferences, like set different window (resolution) sizes, or add or create disk images.

Note: After saving changes in preferences, SheepShaver needs to be shut down/quit and launched again, not restarted!

If everything works as expected, you can delete the COI folder

Take some time to study the setup manual from here: https://www.emaculation.com/doku.php/sh ... heepshaver
It contains a lot of information about the many features of SheepShaver that are not available in COI/Chubby Bunny.
