Mac OS 9 for blind/vision-impaired users

Post by emendelson »

A blind Mac user asked me to set up a version of my preconfigured "Mac OS 9" application with the screen-reading software outSPOKEN, so that the user could work with classic Mac applications. I've done so, and have added a link to the page that describes my application. The forum (rightly) forbids direct links to this kind of setup, so you'll need to search for

Mac OS 9 for OS X/macOS

If you've recently visited the download page, you may need to refresh your browser (Cmd-R) to see the new link.

I hope this may be useful for other blind and vision-impaired users. Apparently nothing else like it is available anywhere for Mac OS 9 or earlier. Of course OS X/macOS has screen-reading software built in, but this doesn't make it possible to use screen-reading software in SheepShaver.

PS The user sent me a copy of outSPOKEN 9.0, which also seems to be the latest version available online. If anyone has the 9.2 or later update, a lot of people will be grateful.

Well that sent me down the rabbit hole. A good write-up from 2001 is available at https://tidbits.com/2001/02/26/accessib ... solutions/

I went archive diving and found lots of copies of 9.0 and 9.0 demo (time limited to 20 minutes), but no 9.2.

Closest I got was https://web.archive.org/web/20040218153 ... emo.asp?25 -- but it's not archived.

Might be worth asking on Macintosh Garden forums.

There's been a chorus of requests on various forums, with no success so far...
